Chapter One
Day #1
VOICES ARE SAYING THIS.A number of parents are sitting around a coffee table in the school’s parent room. The parents agreed among themselves at the last Back-To-School night to do something to assist the teachers. They decided to meet each Tuesday at the school to volunteer their services. Most Tuesdays they find themselves sitting in the parent room talking among themselves about school related issues.-One parent comments, “This makes me think of a television show that I watch. We meet here but we…
-“Well, no worry,” interrupted another parent. “ I’ve visited classrooms but the student teacher assistant, I think they call them TAs, corrects the papers…I don’t get any fulfillment from simply passing out worksheets when I’m there.”
-“You know, there is something that I wonder about, “another parent starts, “I wonder if my child gets a sense of well-being from attending school. My child often comes home with complaints about school. You know social things, not so much about the teaching or the classroom assignments.”
-“I know what you mean. My kid is always talking about what the other students think about clothing, opposite sex issues, school cliques that sort of thing.”
-“You know, there seems to be some kids that don’t seem to have this problem with school. Then there are other students that just seem to get along, get good grades, the teachers like them and they go on to do good things after high school.”
-“Yes, it seems some children just like school…it works for them…maybe they just expect it to work well, or it could be that they think they work well within the school systems.”
-“Well, I believe that my child had a great sense of well-being as a baby. I’m not so sure if I’d say that with confidence about my child now. Is it possible to restore a sense of wholeness in my kid?”
As they were discussing the issue, can you decide whether “wholeness” is a school initiated perception or a student readiness deficiency? Imagine the report card marks of a mentally “whole” child.
Coach's comment:What’s the challenge point here? To be clear that the process of educating our children is a process that builds them into whole people.
