Extend quality learning beyond the classroom
VOICES ARE SAYING THIS.The boys were planning to meet at the city park to play basketball. He liked the atmosphere at the park. Everyone was always there doing something. Kids of all ages could either play on the merry-go-round, the tennis court, the baseball field, or the basketball courts. The basketball courts drew the largest crowds. The girls were there too. He knew he had to do his homework before going to the park. He thought, “I should have done it at school today.”
The teacher assigned us to write an essay about “When learning begins and ends each day.” He started thinking about the assignment on the bus ride home from school. How can I write a five paragraph essay about that? The neighborhood boys were meeting at the park to play basketball in an hour.” I need to write this thing in one hour’s time,” he thought.
Mother knew I was home from school when she heard the screened door bang closed. The next thing for me was to get my home work done so that I could have the rest of the afternoon for free-time. Most of the time, I spent my free-time outside with the boys. The only thing I needed to do was to convince Mother that I’d completed my homework.
Most of the time, Mother won’t ask me about my progress on projects due later in the week. All I had to do was to do the homework for the next school day. Actually there have been days I didn’t complete all my homework assignments, but I remember that I play ball just about every day.
Outside I don’t have to worry about “learning.” I hate it when teachers assign homework over the week-ends. There should be a law restricting homework to school days only. Learning should be limited to the time we are at school. We shouldn’t be expected to “study” outside of school hours.
I don’t plan to go to college anyway. I’ll just get a job and support my family like my Dad
didn’t do. Mother is the best, she tells me, “When you’re at school do the best you can, you never know when you won’t be able to go to school to learn.”
Mother doesn’t know…but I’m going to be a professional athlete. Some people laugh at me when I tell them that...but that’s o.k. I’m not going to let anyone take my dream from me. Actually, even though I may not be the best student, I dream of getting a scholarship to college. I’ve heard of athletes who made it to college and didn’t go to class at all. They just got drafted and made millions of dollars. That’s me. This homework doesn’t matter.
COACH’S COMMENT:Schools don’t teach children that learning is something that happens all the time. Because our children learn new things about the world every waking moment, isn’t it possible that they can use how to-learn skills in the classroom? What’s the challenge point here? To be clear that the process of educating our children is a process that builds then into whole people.
