Build Character into your child
VOICES ARE SAYING THIS.“Hey Dad, can you please explain to me why we have to spend so much time in high school? School gets on my very nerves. In fact, I think it’s a waste of time. I’m not learning that much anyway. If someone were to give me one thousand dollars to tell them what I learned in the sixth grade I wouldn’t get the money.”
Wow, that’s interesting. You’ve gone to elementary school, middle school and now high school and you don’t know why you go to school?”
“I know I go to school to learn. I get decent enough grades. I just think we are required to spend too much time in class. I have some friends who will tell anyone who asks that they go to school to see their friends. I could be getting a job and earning myself a little money.”
”Son, I’m glad you asked, we got your report card in the mail today.”
“Yeah, Dad, I did the best I could. You remember, I told Mom that the math teacher and the science teacher don’t like me.”
“Umm, but do you turn in your home work every day?”
“Oh yeah, I finished my homework in class. The teacher gives us time to work on homework in class.”
“Well, how do you know you got the right answers for the home work? These report card marks suggest you don’t understand the work.”
“Me and my friends do our homework in class together, and my friend gets good marks.”
“My question is how do you know that you are learning?”
“As long as I get the answers right on the true and false tests I suppose that means I’m learning. The tests that they give at school make it easy. We get those multiple choice test and my friends and I always finish early. You know, if I don’t know the answer, I just guess the right answer. At least I answer all the questions. The teachers just run the answer cards through the computer to get our marks.”
“Yeah, I can see that the computer shows you are not getting many of the answers right. I don’t think you are benefiting if you are guessing on the tests. How can guessing develop your brain?”
“My brain is fine.”
COACH’S COMMENT:
What’s the challenge point here? To be clear that the process of educating our children is a process that builds their character.
